This post explains how to form the plural of regular neuter nouns in Bulgarian (I’ll cover the exceptions in another post). You might also like to check out my posts on the plural of feminine nouns or the plural of masculine nouns. I’d also advise reading my post on the gender of nouns if you haven’t done so already.
There are four ways to form the plural of a neuter nouns. As with feminine and (most) masculine nouns, this depends on how the word ends.
Neuter nouns ending in -о
To form the plural of nouns ending in –o we replace the final letter with –a. See the below examples:
- Вино (wine) becomes вина
- Гърло (throat) becomes гърла
- Кино (cinema) becomes кина
Neuter nouns ending in -е
For these nouns, we simply add –та to the end of the word to form the plural. Here are some examples:
- Кафе (coffee) becomes кафета
- Пиле (chicken) becomes пилета
- Зеле (cabbage) becomes зелета
Neuter nouns ending in -ие
Nouns that end in –ие drop the –е and acquire –я, as you can see below:
- Повторение (repetition) becomes повторения
- Представление (performance) becomes представления
- Съобщение (message) becomes съобщения
Neuter nouns ending in -ище
Nouns ending in –ище become –ищa.
- Училище (school) becomes училища
- Читалище (community centre) becomes читалища
- Игрище (pitch / playground) becomes игрища
